About FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme. It assists eligible students in paying part or all of their tuition fees for courses undertaken with institutions approved as higher education providers under HESA. Australian citizens, holders of humanitarian permanent resident visas and some New Zealand citizens are eligible for FEE-HELP assistance.

The FEE-HELP scheme covers studies in all UTS Insearch diplomas.

You can check the approved higher education providers listed on the Australian Government website, Study Assist. You'll find UTS Insearch listed on the site.

You need to complete a Request for a FEE-HELP – Non-university private higher education providers form, which is available online through eStudent. You'll receive guidance on how to complete the form in your offer letter. 

You need an Australian Tax File Number (TFN) or a Certificate of Application for a TFN from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), confirming that you've applied for a TFN. You must provide the TFN to UTS Insearch Student Centre staff as soon as it's available, and no later than the Census Date.

Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) in person at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Ask them to give you a Certificate of Application for a TFN while you're there.

Yes, you can apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) online at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website. You'll need to print the Application Summary, which includes your application reference number. You must take the Application Summary and your proof of identity documents when attending your interview at Australia Post. This must be completed within 30 days of applying for your TFN.

At your interview, you'll be given a receipt with a barcode that matches the application reference number on the Application Summary. When applying for FEE-HELP at UTS Insearch through eStudent, upload the Application Summary and the Australia Post receipt. As soon as you receive your TFN, provide this to the Student Centre team at UTS Insearch.

No, there is no application charge. But, there is a 25% loan fee based on the FEE-HELP loan that you receive for your diploma course.

You will be unable to obtain FEE-HELP assistance unless you provide one of the following three:

  • A TFN;
  • A Certificate of Application for a TFN OR
  • An ATO Application Summary and an Australia Post receipt with a barcode which matches the reference number on the Application Summary.

It is important to provide the TFN to UTS Insearch as soon as you receive it and it must be provided on or before census date. Visit the Student Centre to provide your TFN.

UTS Insearch requires your TFN as soon as you receive it from the ATO. If you experience a delay in receiving your TFN from the ATO and you can't provide it to UTS Insearch until after the census date, don't worry. You're still entitled to receive the FEE-HELP loan for the subjects you're enrolled in at the relevant census date.

You are required to submit your Request for a FEE-HELP loan Non-university private higher education providers form through eStudent, immediately after you accept your offer. Tuition fees must be paid or your application for a FEE-HELP loan must be received and approved prior to course commencement.

No. Before you can enrol in a unit of study, the required tuition fee must be paid or a request to become a FEE-HELP student must be received by UTS Insearch.

There are citizenship or residency requirements (refer to the Study Assist website www.studyassist.gov.au).

A CHESSN is a unique number provided to FEE-HELP students by the Department of Education and Training. It is automatically allocated to all students who request FEE-HELP assistance. If you don't already have a CHESSN, you will be given one by UTS Insearch staff when you apply for FEE-HELP.

How do I get a CHESSN?

A CHESSN is automatically allocated to all students who request FEE-HELP assistance. For commencing students, you will receive your CHESSN after you accept your offer at UTS Insearch. The FEE-HELP balance available to you will be provided at the same time when you receive the CHESSN.

For a UTS Insearch diploma, the amount of FEE-HELP debt is the amount of the loan plus 25%.

Yes, you can. If you are a FEE-HELP student, remaining (or outstanding) subject fees unpaid after the census date will become a FEE-HELP debt. The cost of this debt plus the 25% loan fee will be the loan total that will eventually need to be repaid by you through the taxation system when you have reached the pre-determined income threshold.

Immediately after the census date each semester, you'll receive a CAN (Commonwealth Assistance Notice) detailing your FEE-HELP debt for that semester.

You will not incur a FEE-HELP debt. FEE-HELP fees for the withdrawn units of study will be re-credited to your FEE-HELP balance. Your application to withdraw must be submitted in writing to our Student Centre on or before Census Date.

You can apply to have your FEE-HELP balance re-credited (and your FEE-HELP balance remitted) in special circumstances. Supporting documentation is required for assessment of your application.

Yes, but you must pay the fees before census date. You cannot pay tuition fees after the census date as unpaid fees immediately after Census Date have already become a Commonwealth debt.

No, a FEE-HELP debt will only be incurred for unpaid fees immediately after the census date. If all fees have been paid before the census date no FEE-HELP debt will be incurred.

Your letter of offer will contain detailed instructions on how to accept your offer. In order to secure your offer, you will need to accept it and either pay your fees or apply for FEE-HELP (if eligible).

Note that accepting your offer and applying for FEE-HELP is done online via eStudent. If under 18 years of age, the acceptance form needs to be signed by you and your parent/guardian and returned as outlined in the offer. You may still apply for FEE-HELP online.
